Laboratory Description

There is increasing evidence that various chemicals introduced into the living environment artificially. These chemicals are always abusive because of elimination their side effects in human or other organisms. The endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs, also called environmental hormones) cause the most severe damage due to the uneasy digestion property and accumulation in bodies for long time. Previous studies reveal that EDCs injure endocrine and reproduction system, such as sexual reverse in fish, decline of ovulation in birds, and abnormal spermatogenesis in mammalians. However, many researches only study on the physiological observation and analysis.

In order to understand the reaction mechanism of EDCs, my lab focuses on the regulation of steroidogenesis pathway. The target genes of our study are CYP11A1 and CYP19 that encode P450scc and aromatase enzymes those convert cholesterol to glucocorticoid, mineralocorticoid and sex steroids. The human choriocarcinoma JEG3 cells and mouse Leydig tumor MA-10 cells are two major models for the study to represent the EDCs damage in mammalian, like abortion or sperm abnormality. The results of our research can explain the exactly mechanisms of EDCs and may provide some insights to protect from these damage.
